June 15th 2007,Schools ,Colleges and offics were deserted. It was not a national holiday.
It was much bigger than that.
It was the release of the much awaited movie of the millenium ,and the biggest India has ever seen.A 65 crore movie ...
What more can it be than a Rajnikanth movie directed by Shankar , music by Rahman ?
Can the stakes be ever higher than this ?
But the greatest satisfaction comes when the movie comes out in top throttle.
It is nearly impossible describing the enormity of the movie , the splendor , glitz and glamour surrounding it ,the visual array of stunning and unbelievable sets in songs and most of all Rajnikanth.
After being financially destroyed by Suman, Rajini's acting is racy and will appeal to fans. He is impressive in some scenes like cornering Suman on a tea stall bench and talking to him, converting black money to white and returning in a bald get-up from overseas, eating chillies in Shriya's house and yelling in pain. It is nice to see Rajini not spout his usual loud punch dialogues.
Vivek as Rajini's uncle tests your nerves when he tries to be comic. Looking at a fat lady and saying "Bungala ivarudhu paar" and asking the person who comes as the minister's PA "Manaiviyin rate..." are some of Sujatha's second rate dialogues that he spouts.
"If one knows when one will die, the rest of the living days will be living hell" is one of the places where one can make out Sujatha's stamp in writing.
In the song where Rajini and Nayantara dance, it is not nice to see the unnatural greenery through graphics.
"Sahara saaralil" is melodious but in the background music, AR Rehman does not seem to attract any attention to himself.
"Free education, free medical aid, a country without black money" is what Shankar would like to project in this film. It is laudable that the director would like to cause awareness of this among the people. But Shankar has deviated from the message he wants to convey and all w see are the man Rajini and what he does.
When Rajini is being hounded by the villains, the film shows him romancing Shriya and there are comedy tracks too, deviating from the serious aspect of the film.
"I want to make films that have no pretensions, but circumstances have pushed me into grandiose productions." Shankar has said this in many of his interviews and we sincerely wish that he does not fall into the same route.
All said there is no doubt that The Boss will rewrite the record books.
But the force and outcome xpected of "RAJINI and SHANKAR" is missing...
Catch the movie at
